ZUPCO Worker Arrested for Alleged Rape of Job Seeker
A ZUPCO employee has been arrested for allegedly luring a woman who was looking for a job into his office at the company’s depot in Belvedere, Harare, where he is accused of raping her. Amon Manjengwa, 44, reportedly made the 22-year-old victim stay with him as a couple for a year.
The situation came to light last month when the victim reported the rape to the police after Manjengwa ended their relationship and married another woman. He was arrested on Tuesday.
The victim said she went to the ZUPCO Belvedere Depot in December 2023 to apply for a job as a bus conductor. Manjengwa approached her and offered to help her get the job. He then led her into his office, locked the door, and asked for her National Identification Card.
While in the office, he is accused of forcing her to have sex with him after she refused. After the assault, he allegedly begged her not to tell anyone and promised to marry her instead.
The couple lived together until last month, when Manjengwa left her to marry another woman. This prompted the victim to report the incident to the police.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest and urged other victims to come forward. The investigation is ongoing as police gather more information about the case.
