ZRP Officers’ Uniform Woes Exposed

A viral video showing a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer using a wire to fasten his uniform due to missing buttons has sparked widespread debate and criticism over the dire state of police resources in Zimbabwe.
The footage, which was posted yesterday on the Crime Watch Twitter handle account, highlights the worsening conditions within the force, raising concerns about government funding and police welfare.
Many Zimbabweans have expressed frustration over the state of the country’s police force, with some questioning how officers can maintain professionalism when they are struggling with basic necessities.
“The situation has reached a critical point, and it’s heartbreaking to see our law enforcement officers struggling with basic necessities,” said one social media user.
The ZRP, which has a strength of around 45,000 officers, has been plagued by underfunding, poor working conditions, and a lack of essential resources. The force has been struggling to cope with limited resources, including vehicles, communication equipment and even basic stationery.
In recent years, the ZRP has faced significant budget cuts, which have exacerbated the shortage of essential resources. Many officers are forced to buy their own uniforms, footwear, and other equipment due to delays in government supply. Others continue to use old and worn-out clothing, which undermines their professionalism and authority.
As of now, there has been no official comment from the government or police leadership regarding the viral video. However, social media users continue to express their outrage and frustration:
@Mudzingwa T: “The government’s priorities are clearly misplaced when our law enforcement officers are forced to suffer due to a lack of resources.”
@Mambokadzi S: “Unfortunately, this is just another example of the chronic underfunding that has plagued our police service for years, with no end in sight.”
