ZRP Officer Nabbed in US$40 Bribery Sting Over Suspect’s Release

HARARE – A Zimbabwe Republic Police officer, stationed at Zengeza Police Station in Harare, has been arrested for allegedly accepting a US$40 bribe to release a theft suspect.
Edson Nangwani appeared in court this week, facing charges of criminal abuse of office and extortion.
The case stems from an incident on June 7, 2025, when Tatenda Tichareva was arrested for allegedly possessing a stolen Samsung Galaxy A04E smartphone.
On the same day, his friend, Vincent Joni, approached Nangwani to inquire about the arrest. Instead of offering a professional response, Nangwani allegedly demanded US$200 to secure Tichareva’s release.
Joni reported the bribe demand to the Police Anti-Corruption Unit (PACU), prompting a strategic anti-corruption operation.
On June 9, PACU detectives accompanied Joni back to Zengeza Police Station, where Nangwani directed him to Office G13 and later Office G16 for the transaction.
Under surveillance, Joni handed over US$40 in marked bills, including a US$20 note (serial PH50115833C) and two US$10 notes (serials PK45658296B and PB36416637E).
Nangwani accepted the cash, unaware that detectives were watching.
According to Bulawayo24, Nangwani was caught red-handed with the trap money in his left hand and was immediately arrested.
He was granted US$100 bail and is expected to return to court in two weeks for a trial date.
The case underscores ongoing efforts by PACU to strengthen accountability within the Zimbabwe Republic Police amid concerns over corruption.
Authorities have vowed to take firm action against officers engaging in unethical practices.
