ZRP Hunts Culprits Behind Fake Chivayo Arrest Statement

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has rubbished a fake press statement circulating on social media that falsely claims businessman Wicknell Munodaani Chivayo is wanted for questioning over alleged fraud.

The viral post, dated 1 November 2025, was crafted to resemble an official police document — complete with the ZRP logo and a forged signature of national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi and instructed Chivayo to report to Harare Central Police Station.

In a strongly worded response, Commissioner Nyathi condemned the statement as a deliberate fabrication designed to mislead the public.

“Reference is made to a fake press statement that has gone viral on social media platforms. The press statement did not originate from the official ZRP communication channels,” he said.

The ZRP has since launched investigations to identify the individuals or groups behind the digital forgery.

Commissioner Nyathi warned that circulating false information using official insignia is a serious offense.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard it as false and misleading. The ZRP is aware of individuals and groups responsible for circulating the fake press statement and appropriate investigations are underway,” he added.

The fake message has triggered confusion and debate across social media, with many users questioning its authenticity and motive.

As of Saturday, Chivayo had not issued any public comment regarding the matter.

Commissioner Nyathi urged citizens to verify all police communications through trusted platforms.

“The public is urged to rely only on information released through the official ZRP platforms and verified media sources,” he said.

According to B-Metro, the incident has raised concerns about the growing trend of digital misinformation targeting high-profile individuals.

The police have intensified efforts to track down the originators of the forged statement and warned that those found responsible will face legal consequences.
