ZRP Flags Alarming Surge in Vehicle Thefts

…as Nyathi cautions: ‘Your negligence is a criminal’s opportunity.’

The Zimbabwe Republic Police says there has been a surge in motor vehicle thefts across the country, with six vehicles reported stolen within just 24 hours in Harare and Mashonaland West.

The cases, which occurred between June 11 and 12, paint a worrying picture of criminals targeting residential areas, overnight parking spots, and even preying on unsuspecting Good Samaritans who offer lifts to strangers.

In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned:

“Motorists must not let their guard down. Leaving keys in unattended vehicles or trusting strangers with access creates opportunities for criminals. It is the responsibility of vehicle owners to assist police in maintaining law and order by securing their vehicles at all times.”

In Avonlea, Harare, brazen thieves broke into a company premises and got away with two vehicles a Toyota Hilux and a Mazda BT50 as well as valuable goods including cement, generators, solar batteries, refrigerators, a digital camera and money-counting machines.

The Toyota Hilux and one of the machines were later recovered in Majuru Village, Kutama.

In a separate incident in Mutorashanga, a man parked his Honda Fit at the back of a shop and left the keys inside before going to bed. He awoke at midnight to find the vehicle missing.

In Karoi, a 29-year-old lost his Toyota Fun Cargo after allowing an acquaintance, identified only as Moses Kachasu, to sleep in the vehicle.

Despite the car keys being kept in the house, the suspect managed to start the vehicle and fled.

Another theft occurred in Ruwa’s Fairview Park, where thieves broke into a home, stole car keys from atop a wardrobe and drove away in a Nissan Caravan NV350, also stealing household items in the process.

In downtown Harare, a man who left his unlocked Honda Fit at the corner of Leopold Takawira and Samora Machel Avenue returned an hour later to find it gone.

Police are urging the public to exercise extreme caution, particularly when parking in CBD zones and leaving vehicles unattended.

“The ZRP urges all motorists to be cautious, vigilant, and ensure that vehicles are properly secured. Avoid leaving car keys in unattended vehicles,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

As motor vehicle theft cases escalate, police say public cooperation is critical in curbing the trend.
