ZRP Flags 300 Vehicles for Traffic Light Vandalism, Issues 7-Day Ultimatum

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has flagged at least 300 vehicles allegedly involved in the vandalism of traffic lights across the country and has given their owners or drivers a seven-day ultimatum to report to authorities for investigations.

This comes as Zimbabwe intensifies its smart traffic policing initiatives.

Last May, the Cabinet gave the nod to the engagement of Vitronic Machine Vision Middle East, a Dubai-based firm specialising in Smart Traffic Management Systems.

The system, now operational, allows authorities to track and flag traffic violations, including damage to infrastructure, with high-tech accuracy.

In a statement, ZRP National Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the flagged vehicles were captured through the newly implemented Electronic Traffic Management System and urged affected motorists to cooperate with police efforts to restore law and order.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for cooperation from 290 motorists with the listed vehicle registration numbers to assist in the ongoing investigations.

“The motorists or vehicle owners are urged to fully cooperate and assist in the maintenance of law and order in the country by reporting to the Police within the next seven days,” said Nyathi.

Nyathi said the system is a key part of modernising the country’s policing methods, especially in curbing reckless driving and vandalism.

“With the advent of technology in policing, the days of reckless driving by motorists are coming to an end.

“Drivers are reminded to be law-abiding citizens and collectively contribute towards road safety,” he said.

He added that the flagged motorists must report to the ZRP National Traffic offices at Mkushi Academy (formerly Morris Depot) or contact the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631 or via WhatsApp at 0712 800 197.
