ZNA Soldiers in the Dock Over Mpandawana Nightclub Killing

Two Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) soldiers, Prosper Ncube (35) and Innocent Mazvuru (36) of Infantry 4/2 Brigade in Gutu, have been charged with murder following the fatal beating of fellow soldier Simbarashe Albert Gama.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 28, 2024, at MDD Nightclub near Mpandawana Growth Point.
Gama later succumbed to his injuries on May 12, 2024, at Josiah Magama Army Hospital in Harare.
State papers indicate that the confrontation began when Gama failed to produce his ZNA identification upon request. Ncube, who had allegedly absconded from duty to attend the nightclub, is accused of instigating the altercation.
The defendants allegedly restrained Gama using a shoelace before launching a sustained attack, repeatedly kicking and punching him until he fell unconscious.
Witnesses, including bar patron Hardlife Maheya and barman Cephas Mudyiwa, reportedly tried to intervene but were warned off by the accused soldiers.
The Mirror reports that Mpandawana has seen a history of violent incidents involving military personnel, raising concerns about discipline and accountability within the army ranks.
The matter was reported to the Military Police and officer Tapera Mbizvo responded, finding Gama in an unresponsive state.
He was initially treated at 4/2 Camp Battalion Clinic before being transferred to Gutu Mission Hospital.
Despite medical intervention, he died weeks later.
Mazvuru is represented by Omen Mafa of Mutendi, Mudisi & Shumba Legal Practitioners, while the case is currently before Justice Helena Charewa at the Masvingo High Court.
Prosecutors are expected to present key evidence as the court determines the soldiers’ legal responsibility in the fatal attack.
Investigations continue, with trial proceedings expected to reveal further details surrounding the tragic incident
