Zimta Applauds School Feeding Program
The Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta) supports the government’s school feeding program, emphasizing its role in improving student concentration.
Zimta Secretary-General Goodwill Taderera noted that many students arrive at school hungry, making it difficult to focus or forcing them to drop out to help their families find food.
“Students come hungry and struggle to stay focused. Some drop out to help their parents find food,” Taderera said. He urged the government to extend the program to vulnerable communities in high-density suburbs, farming, and mining areas.
Max Mkandla, president of the National Association of Schools Development Committees, supported the program but raised concerns about food safety, especially genetically modified products.
“The Ministry of Health must ensure the food is safe for our children,” Mkandla said.
Ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro confirmed the program’s launch in peri-urban and rural schools, with mealie-meal, cooking oil, and other essentials delivered to 205 schools. Zimta Applauds School Feeding Program.
