ZimParks Warns of Rising Crocodile Attacks, Urges Vigilance

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has reported a concerning rise in crocodile attacks, recording nine fatalities and 11 injuries over the past two months.
The attacks have also resulted in the loss of 44 cattle and 60 goats, with 49 cases of human-crocodile conflict documented during this period.
In a statement released on Wednesday, ZimParks spokesperson Mr. Tinashe Farawo stressed the importance of caution around water bodies, especially during the rainy season.
“Parents and herders must be vigilant and keep a close eye on children and livestock when near water bodies, as crocodiles can strike at any moment,” he warned.
Farawo urged communities to create barriers in areas commonly used for fishing, swimming, or domestic chores. He emphasized that such measures are crucial for enhancing public safety and reducing the risk of crocodile attacks.
ZimParks highlighted its commitment to balancing public safety with wildlife conservation. The authority is working with local councils and conservation partners to educate people on crocodile behavior and implement safety practices.
Statistics from ZimParks indicate that human-wildlife conflicts remain a significant challenge, with approximately 300 fatalities recorded across Zimbabwe between 2019 and 2023.
The recent surge in crocodile attacks has underlined the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures to protect lives and livelihoods.
