ZIMCHE Deregisters Foreign Institutions Offering ‘Useless’ Scholarships, Degrees

ZIMCHE Deregisters Foreign Institutions Offering ‘Useless’ Scholarships, Degrees – The news of seven foreign universities being deregistered by the regulatory body responsible for endorsing universities in Zimbabwe has shattered the aspirations of individuals seeking educational avenues overseas, especially those aspiring to pursue undergraduate studies. It is worth noting that one of these institutions had even enlisted the renowned musician, Gemma Griffiths, as its ambassador and was also offering scholarships.

In a notice published in The Sunday Mail, the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) disclosed that these foreign universities had been deregistered. ZIMCHE further stated that obtaining degrees from these institutions holds no significance and would be akin to possessing worthless pieces of paper.

The decision by ZIMCHE to deregister the foreign universities follows their recent proclamation that unaccredited institutions are prohibited from awarding honorary doctorate degrees because this practice breaches the law.

The public advisory, which was published in The Sunday Mail, implored individuals to exercise prudence and thoroughly confirm the accreditation status of foreign universities before enrolling.

ZIMCHE underscored the significance of scrutinizing the accreditation status of foreign universities to guarantee the legitimacy and quality of higher education for children. They also emphasized the potential repercussions of enrolling in an unaccredited institution, such as financial loss and negative implications on academic qualifications and professional opportunities.

The statement reads, “Given this development, we strongly recommend that individuals confirm the accreditation status of foreign universities they plan to enroll in for their children’s university education. Pursuing studies in an unaccredited institution could lead to financial loss and significantly impact academic qualifications and career prospects.”

The universities listed below are not recognized and have been deregistered in Zimbabwe by ZIMCHE: Girne American University from Northern Cyprus, Sharda University of India, Near East University from Northern Cyprus, University of Kyrenia from Northern Cyprus, The European University of Lefke from Northern Cyprus, University of Nicosia from Northern Cyprus and Parul University which had enlisted the services of popular musician Gemma Griffiths to promote its brand.

Earlier last week, the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) has forbidden the International Institute of Philanthropy from conferring ‘degrees.’ Moreover, it has urged the organization to publicly retract ALL awarded degrees and apprise ALL recipients of the same.

The International Institute of Philanthropy has been accused of awarding honorary doctorates to famous personalities, including singer Mudiwa Hood and businessman Dr. Dilesh Nguwaya, CEO of Geo Pomona. However, with no official accreditation, these degrees have been sanctioned invalid by ZIMCHE.
