Two recent convictions have highlighted the alarming rise in rape cases in Zimbabwe, sparking concerns over the safety and well-being of women and children.

In another shocking case, a 51-year-old man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for repeatedly raping his 14-year-old daughter in Inyathi.
The Tredgold Magistrates’ Court convicted him on two counts of rape committed in February 2025. According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the offender’s crimes were exacerbated by threats to kill his daughter and dispose of her body in a nearby mineshaft if she revealed his actions.
These cases are part of a worrying trend of rising rape cases in Zimbabwe. According to experts, many incidents go unreported, and victims often face stigma and trauma, especially minors.
The government and civil society organizations have been working to address the issue, but more needs to be done to ensure perpetrators are held accountable and victims receive the necessary support.
The sentences handed down in these cases are a step towards justice.
