Zimbabwe Loses to Mozambique in COSAFA Cup Opener

The Zimbabwe senior women’s football team commenced its 2024 COSAFA Cup campaign with a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Mozambique on Thursday at Gelvandale Stadium in South Africa.

This opening match in Group D was particularly significant, as Zimbabwe sought redemption after losing to Mozambique in last year’s semi-finals.

The game took a turn early when Mozambique’s Aurora Ngale scored a header from a corner kick in the 17th minute, putting Zimbabwe on the back foot.

The defeat was compounded by the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Cynthia Shonga, who was unable to play due to pressing family matters.

In a post-match interview, Zimbabwe’s coach, Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda, expressed disappointment over the outcome, stating, “We had a solid performance but conceded a preventable goal. We created several chances but failed to convert, and ultimately, it’s about points. We didn’t deserve to lose.”

With the tournament format allowing only the top teams from each group to advance to the semifinals, Zimbabwe’s next match against Lesotho is crucial.

A win is essential for their hopes of progressing further in the competition. However, if Mozambique manages to secure a victory or even a draw against Lesotho, it would effectively end Zimbabwe’s chances.

Kwinji 15 acknowledged the difficulties ahead, saying, “It’s challenging with limited matches; tournaments hinge on securing points and capitalizing on opportunities. Our finishing has to improve if we want to advance.”

Historically, the Mighty Warriors won the COSAFA Cup once, in 2011, marking their only title since the tournament’s inception in 2002. As they prepare for their next challenge, the team remains focused on turning their fortunes around.
