Zim refs to get VAR exercise. The Zimbabwean Football Association has confirmed that the country will host the zonal training for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), with the country looking to improve its level of refereeing for their national matches. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has provided the video technology for use in technically upgrading regions, and Cosafa head of referees Felix Tangawarima has confirmed that equipment will arrive and be used in the first part of this year.

VAR has been an integral part of the current AFCON tournament  currently taking place in the Ivory Coast was decisive in the Nigeria and South Africa show down on Wednesday.   Nigeria thought they had secured a second goal on 85 minutes through Osimhen, but as they celebrated, VAR alerted the on-field referee to an earlier foul on Tau in the Nigerian box. Nigeria’s effort was chalked off and South Africa were awarded a penalty after a review, which Mokoena fired home before Mudau fluffed his golden chance to win it and the game went to extra time and penalties.

However, VAR has been criticized in the Premier League for being too slow and complicated, with supporters not having a good enough in-stadium experience or understanding of the technology. Tony Scholes, the chief football officer for the league, has called upon an improvement in efficiency and a better fan experience so that supporters can understand what is happening on the pitch.
