ZETDC to Install Cameras on 47,000 Transformers Across Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has launched a major security upgrade.

They are installing cameras, alarms, and sensors on 47,000 transformers nationwide to combat the rising theft and vandalism of electricity equipment.

This initiative, in partnership with Powertel Communications, represents a significant change in how ZETDC safeguards and monitors its power network.

Nick Mangwana, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, stated on X, “ZETDC, through Powertel, is putting in place anti-intrusion systems for transformers, allowing for real-time monitoring with cameras, alarms, and sensors.”

He added that the program is currently focused on 47,000 transformers, with installation already completed at 108 monitoring sites.
