Zera Slashes LPG Prices in August Update, Urges Public to Prioritise Gas Safety
The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) has announced a reduction in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices in its August update, lowering costs for consumers nationwide.
The adjustment follows regulatory pricing guidelines and comes amid growing safety concerns linked to gas mishandling.
In the August update, Zera pegged LPG at US$1.51 per kilogramme, down from US$1.57, while the local currency rate dropped to ZWG40.56 per kg from ZWG42.31.
The authority said the revised rates were calculated under the Petroleum (Liquid Petroleum Gas Pricing) Regulations of 2021.
Retailers are required to visibly display the updated prices, although those with trading advantages may offer lower rates.
“These are the LPG prices for August 2025 calculated in line with the Petroleum (Liquid Petroleum Gas Pricing) Regulations of 2021.Operators must clearly display the rates at retail outlets,” Zera said.
Zera’s 2024 Annual Performance Report shows that LPG consumption hit 77 million kilograms last year, supported by 622 licensed retail outlets.
The report cited a 93.7 percent compliance rate, largely due to the crackdown on smuggled cylinders, though illegal vending remains a concern.
The authority also raised alarm over a surge in gas-related accidents, often caused by improper handling and neglect of safety protocols.
It urged continued training for operators and public education to promote safe LPG use.
Zera concluded by reaffirming its commitment to consumer protection and safe energy practices, calling for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to curb illegal activities and promote responsible LPG use nationwide.
