ZERA Greenlights 85MW Solar Plant in Zvishavane, Boosting Zimbabwe’s Renewable Energy Ambitions

ZVISHAVANE – The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has received an application from China-Zim Green Energy and Technology Corporation (Private) Limited to construct an 85MW solar photovoltaic plant at Muzvondiwa Business Centre in Zvishavane.

The proposed project includes the construction of a 132kV transmission line to connect the solar plant to the Mapanzure substation and the existing Zvishavane-Unki transmission line.

Furthermore, the project is expected to contribute significantly to Zimbabwe’s renewable energy mix.

ZERA has invited interested parties to make representations on the application within 14 days from publication, which expires on March 21, 2025.

Meanwhile, the project is expected to commence construction in the second quarter of 2025, with completion slated for 2027.

According to ZERA CEO, Edington Mazambani, the authority is committed to promoting renewable energy in Zimbabwe. “This project is a significant step towards achieving our renewable energy goals”,he said.

In addition, the project will stimulate economic growth, create jobs for locals, and provide a cleaner source of energy, reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

The National Renewable Energy Policy (NREP) aims to achieve an installed renewable capacity of 1,100MW by 2025.

Chinese investments, such as this project, are playing a significant role in boosting Zimbabwe’s power generation capacity.
