Zambian Legislator arrested in Zimbabwe After Three-Month Manhunt

Emmanuel Jay Banda, a Zambian legislator who escaped from custody in August 2024, has been captured by Zimbabwean police. Banda, who was facing charges of aggravated robbery, attempted murder, and escape from lawful custody, fled from Chipata General Hospital on August 4, 2024. Following his escape, the Zambian government offered a two million kwacha reward for information leading to his capture.

Zambia’s Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu, announced that Banda was apprehended in Harare, Zimbabwe, on November 19, 2024. Banda had been renting a flat in Harare, and his location was communicated to Zimbabwean authorities, who cooperated to arrest him. Minister Mwiimbu praised the swift action of the Zimbabwean police in capturing Banda, who was on trial for a non-bailable offence and under the custody of the Zambia Correctional Service at the time of his escape.
