Woman Steals from Church to Pay for Mother’s Care

A 24-year-old woman from Cowdray Park has been arrested for embezzling funds from the Bethel Church, where she is a member.

Bridget Chiedza was taken into custody after admitting to stealing US$118 and R431 from the church’s treasury.

The theft occurred on August 4, 2024, when church secretary Prisca Moyo handed over the money to Chiedza as directed by the church pastor.

However, when church officials later requested the funds for accountability, Chiedza became unreachable, blocking communication with church members.

The church reported the incident to local authorities, leading to Chiedza’s arrest. In court, she pleaded guilty to theft of trust property and asked for leniency, explaining that her actions were driven by financial hardship stemming from her mother’s illness.

“I needed money for her treatment,” Chiedza said tearfully. “It was a mistake, and I regret what I did. I wish to repay the church.”

During the sentencing hearing before Western Commonage magistrate Learnear Khumalo, the court considered her circumstances. Chiedza was ultimately sentenced to 12 months in prison, with three months suspended on the condition that she stays out of trouble for five years.

Additionally, six months were suspended if she completes 210 hours of community service at local health services, and the final three months will be suspended if she repays the stolen funds by November 15, 2024.

The case highlights the struggles faced by many in the community, as financial pressures can lead to desperate actions. Chiedza’s situation serves as a reminder of the broader issues affecting families in the region.
