Woman Arrested with Cocaine and Bullets in Stomach
A 30-year-old Namibian woman faces arrest at OR Tambo International Airport after landing from Brazil with suspected cocaine in her body.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) announced that this arrest marks the tenth drug mule apprehended at the busy airport in the past two months.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe reported that SAPS, along with SA Revenue Service customs and immigration officials, acted on intelligence regarding the woman’s arrival from São Paulo around 7 a.m.
“The team intercepted the suspect as she passed through immigration. They arrested her and took her to a local hospital, where a medical X-ray confirmed the presence of foreign objects in her stomach,” Mathe said.
As of Sunday evening, officials began the process of extracting the suspected drugs. “She has already expelled more than 60 capsules of suspected cocaine and remains under police guard,” Mathe confirmed.
Authorities have yet to determine the total value of the drugs since the extraction process could take time.
National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, praised the multi-disciplinary team’s efforts to combat crime at OR Tambo International Airport.
“Our officers work diligently to intercept hardened criminals. South Africa will not serve as a playground for organized crime; we are tightening the net,” Masemola stated.
Last month, a South African woman posing as a bride-to-be faced arrest at the same airport after authorities discovered 10 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage.
The Hawks’ serious organized crime investigation team apprehended the woman, and officers took two Nigerian accomplices, aged 37 and 52, in for questioning.
They claimed to be waiting for a traveler but could not provide proof, leading authorities to connect them to the arrested drug mule.
