Witchcraft Allegations and “Bluetooth S€x” Scandal Divide Magombeyi Family

A “Bluetooth s€x” scandal (a local term for spirit-transmitted assault), unexplained illnesses and witchcraft accusations have split the Magombeyi family, bringing them before Chief Mutasa’s community court this week.

Samuel Magombeyi says his daughter, Tafadzwa, only falls ill at her husband’s home and blames nephews for casting evil spirits, while other relatives dismiss his claims as baseless.

The dispute has stoked fears of avenging spirits tied to a past hit-and-run fatality and driven a wedge through the extended family.

Chief Mutasa has banned further recriminations and ordered the clan to seek traditional healing together before tensions spiral further.

Samuel told the court that traditional healers failed to cure Tafadzwa’s episodes and referred the matter to Chief Mutasa.

“My daughter fell ill mysteriously. She would not disclose what was wrong. All I knew was that she collapsed at her husband’s homestead and recovered only at my house,” he said.

He added, “She later claimed that one of my nephews was casting evil spirits on her and that it was the spirit of someone killed in a hit-and-run accident by a family member wreaking havoc. That is when the healer sent us to the chief.”

Under oath, Tafadzwa Magombeyi described her ordeal. “I am unsure if I have lost my mental faculties or if something else is amiss, as these episodes typically occur when I am at my husband’s home.

“I only regain my senses at my father’s home, where people inform me that I have been behaving as if possessed, accusing others of possessing mubobobo, murder and various other misdeeds,” she said.

Her testimony underscored the fear and confusion gripping both sides of the family.

According to Manicapost, Samuel’s niece Rudo Magombeyi dismissed his allegations as attention-seeking.

“All this is mere drama. To him, everyone in this family is a witch—we are sick and tired of his accusations,” she said.

Samuel’s sister-in-law, Emilia Magombeyi, recounted her own tragedies and said Samuel refused to help when she needed him most.

“Since I married into this family, my life has been a living nightmare, most of my children have died. When I asked my brother-in-law, Samuel, to help take my sick child to the hospital, he accused me of harming her instead,” Emilia said.

Two of Samuel’s nephews, George and Edson, also testified.

George recounted that his son overheard Samuel accuse him of a fatal hit-and-run: “One day, my son overheard Samuel saying I was responsible for running over the person now believed to be the avenging spirit,” he said.

Edson Magombeyi said the conflict began in 2021, when Tafadzwa first alleged that a spirit called “mubobobo” was being used to s€xu@lly abuse women in the family.

“How can a family even address such an accusation?” he asked.

In-law Talent Chakabvakure shared a chilling pattern of infant fatalities.

“I have lost two babies, both of whom died mysteriously in March of different years. The last one passed away in March 2024. It always occurs in March. Why?”, she asked.

Nephew Shadreck Magombeyi urged reconciliation: “Let us cease fighting and blaming one another. We must work together to uncover the truth behind these events.”

Chief Mutasa adjourned the hearing with a stern warning:

“These matters are not to be taken lightly. Stop the blame game and seek help. If the healer says this is a spiritual issue, consult other traditional healers as a family. Do not rest until you uncover the truth.”
