Wicknell Chivayo Proposes Benjani Mwaruwari for Highlanders FC Coaching Role

Wicknell Chivayo, a prominent businessman, has officially suggested Benjani Mwaruwari for the vacant coaching position at Highlanders FC. Chivayo has offered to cover the entire salary and contract of the former Zimbabwean captain if the club decides to appoint him.

In a recent Facebook post, Chivayo shared that he hosted Mwaruwari and fellow footballer Harlington Shereni for breakfast, describing it as one of the “most cherishable moments” of his life.

He praised Mwaruwari’s impressive career, which includes stints with major clubs like AJ Auxerre, Portsmouth, and Manchester City, stating that Mwaruwari took him on a “beautiful journey through his illustrious football career.”

During their conversation, the topic turned to Highlanders’ recent decision to part ways with coach Pieter de Jongh. This prompted Chivayo to ask Mwaruwari if he would consider stepping in as coach. Mwaruwari expressed interest “on condition that Chivayo personally guarantees his contractual package,” a request Chivayo deemed fair given the striker’s reputation.

Chivayo has since made a formal submission to Highlanders’ leadership to propose Mwaruwari for the role. He pledged that, outside his existing $1 million sponsorship, he would fund a car, salary, and additional benefits, stating, “these commitments would only apply if Highlanders choose Mwaruwari.” He added that the main sponsorship package would remain intact regardless of the club’s decision.

Chivayo emphasized the importance of local expertise in coaching, arguing that Mwaruwari’s international pedigree combined with his understanding of Zimbabwean football culture makes him an ideal candidate. He remarked that foreign coaches, predominantly white, “have not delivered the expected results at Bosso,” asserting that Mwaruwari’s appointment aligns with the national mantra, “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo.”

Furthermore, Chivayo framed his proposal as part of his philanthropic work and in honor of the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo, a passionate Highlanders supporter.

He stated, “As part of my philanthropic work, and in honour of the legacy of the late VP JOHN LANDA NKOMO, who was a lifelong and passionate supporter of BOSSO, I tabled this offer for their consideration.” He expressed confidence that with Mwaruwari at the helm, “BOSSO has what it takes to reclaim glory in the 2026 Premier League season.”
