When gardens become battlefields: Nyanga man ordered to perform 350 hours of community service for assault

NYANGA – A 47-year-old Chitando village man has been sentenced to 350 hours of community service for assaulting a 38-year-old woman who he accused of passing through his garden at Nyamakomba irrigation scheme.

Brighton Chitando appeared before the Nyanga Magistrate’s Court facing assault charges.

According to State papers, on November 18, 2024, at around 0600 hours, the accused person allegedly shouted at the 38-year-old complainant at Nyamakomba irrigation scheme, accusing her of trespassing through his garden.

The accused person allegedly assaulted the complainant with a stick, inflicting injuries all over her body.

The complainant sustained injuries, including a swollen left forearm.

Chitando was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment, with six months suspended for five years. The remaining 10 months were wholly suspended, conditional upon the accused person performing 350 hours of community service.
