Watch: CNN Anchor Interrupts Live Interview to Check on Her Mother During Istanbul Earthquake – Panic briefly struck the CNN Turk newsroom on Wednesday when a powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook Istanbul, prompting news anchor Meltem Bozbeyoglu to calmly pause a live interview and ask her producer to call her mother.

The earthquake tremor, which hit at 12:49 local time (09:49 GMT), was part of a series of quakes that rattled Turkey’s largest city, causing widespread evacuations.

Live footage showed the studio shaking as Bozbeyoglu turned to her team, visibly concerned, and asked, “Can you reach my mother?”.

Emergency officials confirmed that the quake struck at a depth of 6.92 km (4.3 miles), making it the strongest to hit Istanbul in recent years.

Though the shaking only lasted about 15 seconds, it left a significant impact—at least 151 people were hospitalized, many injured while attempting to flee buildings.

Fortunately, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reported no fatalities or structural destruction at this time since the earthquake hit.

The incident revived painful memories of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in February 2023, which struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria, claiming over 59,000 lives.
