VP Mohadi to Commission Climate-Smart Homes for Binga Flood Victims

Vice-President Kembo Mohadi is expected to commission 37 newly built homes today in Nsungwale Village, Binga District, Matabeleland North Province—marking a key milestone in Zimbabwe’s ongoing post-disaster recovery efforts.

The homes, constructed under the Government’s Binga Housing Recovery Project, are part of a long-term initiative to resettle families displaced by the destructive February 2020 floods.

Triggered by the overflow of the Sibwambwa, Sikanda, Namapande, and Manyenyengwa rivers, the floods devastated 181 households, with 81 families identified for urgent relocation.

In the lead-up to the commissioning, Binga District Development Coordinator Mr Lands Kabome confirmed that all preparations were in place.

“A total of 37 houses were constructed and Vice-President Mohadi will officially commission them today. Additionally, a 10.5-kilometre access road was rehabilitated and is currently being gravelled. Water infrastructure for the homes is now fully operational,” he said.

The newly built homes—modern, fully serviced, and climate-resilient—stand in stark contrast to the traditional pole-and-dagga huts still common across Binga District.

According to The Chronicle, the resettlement forms part of the Second Republic’s inclusive development strategy, which aims to upgrade rural infrastructure, enhance climate resilience, and strengthen service delivery under National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and Vision 2030.

If the commissioning goes ahead as scheduled, today’s event will mark more than just handovers—it will represent a renewed promise to rebuild lives, restore dignity, and leave no community behind in the face of growing climate challenges.
