Villagers Take Drastic Action Against Marauding Elephants

BEITBRIDGE – Over 200 villagers from Tongwe and surrounding areas, including local leaders, killed two elephants that had been terrorizing the community and destroying crops in the fields.

The incident occurred after repeated attempts to scare the elephants away failed, leaving the community with little choice but to take drastic action (Crime Watch Zimbabwe).

The elephants’ raids had devastating consequences, with essential crops like maize and sorghum being consumed, leaving families starving.

In desperation, the community took matters into their own hands to protect their livelihoods.

This incident underscores the growing human-wildlife conflict in Zimbabwe, where increasing elephant populations and shrinking habitats have led to more frequent encounters between humans and wildlife.

In Zimbabwe, human-wildlife conflict is a recurring issue, with many reported cases of animals straying from game parks and conservancies into communities. In such cases, community leaders are encouraged to contact the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks).

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has not yet commented on the incident.
