VIDEO: Zimbabwe Launches Presidential Internet Scheme – The government of Zimbabwe has launched a new plan to roll out high-speed internet services across the country under the Presidential Internet Scheme.
The programme is designed to connect underserved areas and boost access to digital services in rural communities.
Announcing the development during a post-Cabinet media briefing, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, revealed that over 2,400 administrative wards will be connected using a combination of Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology and fibre optic networks.
“This initiative is meant to close the connectivity gap in communities that have been left behind. We are focusing on locations that have little to no internet access, especially remote parts of the country,” said Dr Muswere.
Targeted institutions include schools, police stations, clinics, traditional leaders’ homesteads, community centres, and agricultural offices, all of which will be linked to reliable internet infrastructure.
According to Muswere, the rollout will begin in June 2025 and run through to 2030, with progress reviewed regularly to keep pace with advancements in technology.

He added that the scheme is aligned with the government’s broader Smart Zimbabwe Master Plan, which aims to drive economic growth through digital empowerment.
“We are looking at increasing digital literacy, promoting financial inclusion, expanding access to e-services, and enhancing transparency in government operations,” he explained.
ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera added another layer of excitement to the initiative, revealing that free internet access points will be set up in rural areas through upgraded community information centres, now to be known as digital centres.
“We are establishing free Wi-Fi zones in these centres to ensure no one is left behind in this digital revolution,” Mavetera stated. “We’re also working with internet providers to make data more affordable, especially for rural users.”
