Veteran Ugandan Leader Moses Ali Re-elected to Parliament at 86

Veteran Ugandan Leader Moses Ali Re-elected to Parliament at 86 – Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and veteran politician, General Moses Ali (86), has been re-elected as Member of Parliament for Adjumani West Constituency following Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

Gen. Ali contested under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket and defeated three challengers to secure another term in the legislature.

According to results released by Adjumani District Electoral Commission registrar Christine Acai, Ali received 12,854 votes, narrowly defeating Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Patrick Tandrupasi, who garnered 11,770 votes.

Independent candidate Gasper Draga received 522 votes, while National Unity Platform (NUP) contender Stephen Lyo obtained 293 votes.

A long-serving figure in both Uganda’s political and military spheres, Gen. Ali has held several senior government positions, including Second Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament, and ministerial portfolios covering Finance, Internal Affairs, and Sports. He has served in government for more than five decades and has been a Member of Parliament for approximately 25 years.

During his campaign, Gen. Ali pledged to focus on local development initiatives, including the construction of the Laropi Bridge across the River Nile, upgrading health facilities, improving access to clean water and electricity in rural communities, and tarmacking key roads in the West Nile region.

His re-election comes amid ongoing public debate in Uganda regarding leadership renewal. Civil society activists had previously petitioned the Constitutional Court to block his nomination, citing concerns related to age and health. However, the legal challenge did not prevent his participation in the elections.

Supporters argue that Gen. Ali’s long record of public service and continued grassroots support in Adjumani West justify his renewed mandate.
