Vertical ploughing yields big gains

MBERENGWA-As the new growing season approaches, Neta group of farmers from the Masimba area, under Chief Bvute are turning to vertical ploughing- a revolutionary technique that reduces soil compaction, improves soil aeration and minimizes erosion.

In an interview with AfroGazette News, Piason Mushayi, a local farmer from Neta Group explained the benefits of vertical ploughing, including reduced soil disturbance, improved porosity and enhanced water-holding capacity.

“l have seen a significant improvement in soil and drainage since adopting vertical ploughing. It also reduced soil erosion and increased water retention, resulting in higher crop yields, he said”.

However, Mushayi noted that vertical ploughing requires specialized equipment and is not suitable for crops with shallow roots.”lt is also labor-intensive and time-consuming, but the benefits far outweigh the challenges, said Mushayi”.

Another farmer,Tulani Ngwenya emphasized the importance of optimal depths and spacing in achieving successful vertical ploughing.”For optimal results, I recommend ploughing to a depth of 10 cm and spacing of 30 cm, said Ngwenya”.

Agritex officers are urging farmers to adopt vertical ploughing to address food security challenges.

“In a recent interview, the Agriculture Extension Officer in Ward 18 of Mberengwa District, Mr. Chimani Mangwiro emphasized the importance of vertical ploughing, saying “Vertical ploughing can increase crop yields by up to 30%, reduce soil erosion by up to 50%, and improve soil fertility by up to 25%, making it a crucial strategy for farmers to improve their livelihoods and contribute to national food security.”

Mangwiro acknowledged that farmers may encounter challenges such as equipment costs and soil type limitations.”Start with a small area, test the technique and seek advice from local experts,he advised.”

Acting Chief Director for Agricultural and Development Advisory Services (ARDAS), Mr. L. Munamati, recently emphasized the need for farmers to utilize available resources effectively and embrace innovative farming methods to ensure food security.
