Uganda’s Museveni Takes Early Lead in Presidential Election, Eyes Seventh Term

Uganda’s Museveni Takes Early Lead in Presidential Election, Eyes Seventh Term – Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has taken an early lead in the ongoing presidential elections. Earlier, he claimed he would win by 80% if the vote counting was free from interference.

Museveni, 81, has been in power since 1986 following a five-year guerrilla war and is now seeking a seventh term, which would extend his rule to nearly 40 years. If re-elected, most Ugandans would have spent their entire lives under his leadership.

A former rebel leader, Museveni played a role in ending Idi Amin’s rule in the late 1970s and removing Milton Obote in 1985.

During his long tenure, he has overseen constitutional changes that abolished presidential term limits in 2005 and removed the age limit in 2017, allowing him to remain eligible for office. Interestingly, he has previously stated that one of Africa’s greatest challenges is leaders who cling to power.
