Two More Harare City Workers Die in Latest Water Works Tragedy

By Loyd Matare

Two City of Harare employees died this morning while working at the Morton Jaffray Water Works near Norton, in what authorities have described as a devastating workplace accident.

This is the second tragedy involving municipal staff in a short space of time, following the fatal incident at the Firle Water Treatment Plant in Glen View, where two other employees died after inhaling toxic gases while on duty.

According to a notice issued by the local authority, initial reports suggest the workers were carrying out duties on a decommissioned clarifier when the tragedy occurred.

Police have since been alerted and are attending the scene.

“The City of Harare regrets to inform residents of the unfortunate death of two employees at our Morton Jaffray Water Works near Norton this morning,” the statement reads.

“Initial reports indicate that the employees were working on a decommissioned clarifier when tragedy struck.

“The City of Harare is investigating the incident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this devastating loss.”

The council added that it is cooperating fully with authorities as investigations get underway and assured residents that the accident has not affected water production or quality.

“We ask the community to join us in offering support and compassion to those grieving this heartbreaking loss,” the city said.

Both incidents have raised renewed concerns over workplace safety standards within council departments, with residents associations expected to demand urgent reforms to protect workers operating in high-risk environments.
