Two Candidates D!e During Police Training in South Africa– The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is mourning the loss of two trainee candidates who died while undergoing fitness assessments as part of the department’s 2026 recruitment process.
The first incident occurred on 28 August 2025 at Ruimsig Stadium, where Marvellous Michael Nyambi (24), from Rabie Ridge, collapsed during a routine physical fitness test.
He was immediately transported to Yusuf Dadoo Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A second fatality was reported on 1 September 2025, also at Ruimsig Stadium, involving Zwelethu Tekete (26), a resident of Braamfischerville Phase 1.

Emergency medical personnel responded swiftly and attempted to resuscitate Mr. Tekete on-site, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The incidents occurred during the initial phase of the JMPD recruitment process, which aims to enlist 500 new officers for the department’s 2026 training intake.
Successful candidates undergo 18 months of rigorous training at the JMPD Training Academy, including physical fitness assessments designed to evaluate endurance, strength, and overall physical capability.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla expressed the department’s deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. He emphasized that the safety and well-being of all trainees remain a top priority.
“These tragic incidents have deeply affected the JMPD family. We are committed to reviewing our procedures and ensuring the highest safety standards throughout the recruitment and training processes,” said Mr. Fihla.
Both deaths are currently under investigation to determine the exact causes and whether any procedural or medical factors contributed to the outcomes.
The JMPD has not released further details but confirmed that support is being provided to the affected families during this difficult time.
