In a tragic incident on Sunday, November 10, two boys drowned in an open, rain-filled sewer hole near Setshabelo Primary School in Welkom, Free State. Two Boys Drown in Rain-Filled Sewer Hole
The boys, identified as Liyiso Mkhekwa (11) and Rapelang Sejentu (10), were playing with friends when they accidentally fell into the unguarded construction site.
Their friends rushed to alert their families and residents, who attempted to rescue them but were unsuccessful.

Local resident Thebe Ntsane blamed the Matjhabeng Municipality and the involved construction company, condemning their failure to barricade the dangerous site. Ntsane demanded that both parties take responsibility for the boys’ funerals and compensate the grieving families.
Matjhabeng Municipality spokesperson Tshediso Tlali announced that an official statement would follow discussions with the families, who have requested privacy during their mourning.
