Two Arrested Following Drowning of ECD Learners at Penhalonga Mission School – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested two employees following the tragic drowning of two Early Childhood Development (ECD) learners at a mission school in Penhalonga, Mutare.
The incident occurred on 11 June 2026 when two young boys drowned in a swimming pool on the school premises.
In a statement issued on 17 June 2026, police confirmed that the victims were identified as five-year-old Devian Andrew Mungazi of Harzel Mission School and six-year-old Lovemore Tendedziso of Hobhouse Three, Mutare.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said maintenance supervisor Charles Chigwizura (49) and caretaker Andrew Chingono (38) had been arrested in connection with the incident.
“Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested a maintenance supervisor, Charles Chigwizura (49), and caretaker, Andrew Chingono (38), for culpable homicide following the incident,” said Nyathi.
The suspects are facing culpable homicide charges, with investigators alleging negligence contributed to the deaths of the two children.
Nyathi urged schools, parents and guardians to prioritise the safety of children around recreational facilities.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges school authorities, parents and guardians to ensure that playgrounds and recreational facilities are adequately secured and constantly monitored to prevent avoidable tragedies.”
He added:
“Learning institutions should put in place safety measures including fencing of swimming pools, access control systems and deployment of trained personnel to supervise children during recreational activities.”
Police warned that negligence in maintaining safe environments for children could result in both loss of life and criminal liability.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
