Twelve Students Hurt by Roof Debris in Chirimutsitu Whirlwind

A whirlwind struck Chirimutsitu Primary School last Tuesday, injuring twelve students when debris from the classroom roofs fell during class hours.
The incident, which occurred around noon, sent students scrambling for safety as powerful winds blew off asbestos roofing sheets.
George Chidhakwa, the Makoni District Schools Inspector, confirmed the event, stating, “I am currently out of the district, but I’ve heard that one of our schools suffered damage from strong winds, and some students were hurt.” The incident resulted in injuries for the twelve students, who were caught in the chaos as they attempted to escape.
Councillor Simba Muzariri, representing Makoni Rural District Council Ward 18, reported that the winds not only blew off roofing sheets from two classrooms but also damaged asbestos in three others, with five classrooms suffering extensive damage.
“There were strong winds that swept across the area, affecting the school,” Muzariri added.
Among the injured, one student suffered a deep cut to the head and is currently stable at Rusape General Hospital. The other eleven were treated at Sangano Clinic and subsequently discharged.
An assessment by council officials and an independent contractor estimated the repair costs at US$4,130. The council is appealing to well-wishers and development partners for assistance, stating they will contribute to the repairs but welcome additional support to restore normalcy to the school.
The incident has left students anxious, with many rushing out of classrooms at the slightest sign of wind. Councillor Muzariri emphasized the need for training on safety measures during such disasters to minimize injuries.
Martin Chaburumunda, chairman of the Zimbabwe Rural Teachers’ Union, called for improved school infrastructure and regular inspections to ensure safety.
