Trump to Tinubu: End Christian Killings or Face U.S. Firepower

United States President Donald Trump has issued a dramatic warning to Nigeria, threatening military intervention and a complete halt to U.S. aid if President Bola Tinubu’s administration fails to stop the alleged killings of Christians by extremist groups.
The warning, delivered Saturday via Trump’s Truth Social platform, came amid growing concerns over religious violence in Nigeria.
Trump accused the Tinubu-led government of allowing what he described as a “mass slaughter” of Christians by radical Islamist factions.
He directed the U.S. Department of War to prepare for “possible action” should the killings continue.
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.
“I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians,” Trump declared.
Trump’s remarks followed his decision on Friday to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing what he called an existential threat to Christianity.
He claimed thousands of Christians have been killed and blamed radical Islamist groups for the violence.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed.
“Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN’ — But that is the least of it,” Trump posted.
To escalate the matter further, Trump said he had instructed Rep.
Riley Moore (R-W.Va.), Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), and members of the House Appropriations Committee to investigate the situation and report their findings.
“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other Countries.
“We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!,” he added.
In response, the Nigerian government issued a statement on Saturday rejecting the allegations.
President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom and dismissed Trump’s claims as a misrepresentation of the country’s religious dynamics.
“Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.
“Since 2023, our administration has maintained an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security challenges which affect citizens across faiths and regions,” Tinubu stated.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of religious tolerance in Nigeria’s national identity.
He insisted that the country’s diversity and efforts toward peaceful coexistence are being overlooked by external observers.
“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” Tinubu said.
He further stressed that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees protection for all faiths and that his administration does not condone persecution based on religion.
“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.
“Our administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on protection of communities of all faiths,” Tinubu affirmed.
As diplomatic tensions rise between Washington and Abuja, global observers are closely monitoring how both governments will navigate the fallout from Trump’s explosive remarks — a flashpoint that could reshape U.S.-Nigeria relations and influence international religious rights discourse.
