Trump to Be Sentenced in Hush-Money Case Before Inauguration

A judge has set Donald Trump’s sentencing for his hush-money case in New York for January 10, just weeks before he is supposed to be inaugurated as president.
Justice Juan Merchan said he would not send Trump to jail, put him on probation, or fine him. Instead, he plans to give Trump an “unconditional discharge.” Trump can attend the hearing in person or online.
In May, Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts for falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels to cover up an alleged sexual encounter.
Trump denies any wrongdoing and claims the case is meant to hurt his 2024 campaign.
His spokesperson called the judge’s decision a “witch hunt.” Trump argues that the case could distract him while he is president.
While falsifying business records can lead to a maximum of four years in prison, there is no minimum sentence, and prison time is not required.
Trump is also facing three other criminal cases, including charges related to classified documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
His sentencing was originally scheduled for November 26 but was postponed after he won the election.
