Trump: Only Significant Presidents Get Shot At
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate in the upcoming November 5 election, suggested that only consequential leaders face assassination attempts after what authorities believe was a second attempt on his life.
Trump made the remarks during his first public campaign appearance since the incident on Tuesday.
Speaking at a town hall in Flint, Michigan—a once-thriving industrial city now struggling from factory closures—Trump addressed the recent attack, which the FBI described as a foiled assassination plot at his golf course in Florida.
“You wonder why they tried to shoot me, right? Only presidents who matter get shot at,” Trump told a crowd of fervent supporters. He linked the assassination attempt to his promise to impose heavy tariffs on cars imported from Mexico and China, a central part of his campaign.
Trump also took a moment to commend his election rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, for reaching out after the incident.
Harris confirmed she had contacted Trump to check on his well-being, emphasizing her stance against political violence.
“I wanted to see if he was OK, and I told him what I’ve said publicly — there’s no place for political violence in our country,” Harris said while campaigning in Pennsylvania, another key battleground state.
The former president’s remarks came as both candidates ramp up efforts to win over voters in swing states ahead of the November election.
Trump’s comments about the assassination attempt highlight his narrative that he is a target due to his bold political stances.
