Trump Official’s Solution to Egg Pricing Crisis Sparks Backlash

WASHINGTON D.C.- United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins recently suggested that Americans struggling to afford rising egg prices should consider buying chickens themselves.

However, experts argue that raising chickens is not a practical or cost-effective solution for most Americans.

The egg pricing crisis has been ongoing since 2022, with prices increasing by nearly 25%. The main cause of the price hike is the culling of millions of chickens to prevent the spread of the avian flu.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, many conservatives promised that prices would “come down fast” if they were elected. However, after the election, the Trump administration admitted that it would be “hard to bring down” prices.

Rollins’s suggestion has been met with widespread criticism. Experts argue that raising chickens requires significant resources, including shelter, food and daily attention.

“Chickens at backyard scale will not be cheaper than store eggs. They need shelter and food and daily attention”, said Daniel Laurison, a sociology professor.

According to a thread on the r/BackYardChickens subreddit, the cost of getting to one’s first egg can be as high as $750. This highlights the financial burden of raising chickens, making it an impractical solution for many Americans.

The Trump administration has faced criticism for its handling of the egg pricing crisis. Just last month, Trump falsely claimed that prices were actually lower now than they were before he took office. In reality, egg prices have increased by more than 24% since Trump took office.
