President-elect Donald Trump has appointed billionaire Elon Musk to head the new Department of Government Efficiency. Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will join Musk in this position.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Trump outlined their mission to reduce government red tape and cut unnecessary regulations. He emphasized the need to eliminate wasteful spending; additionally, he highlighted the importance of reorganizing federal agencies.
“This could be the ‘Manhattan Project’ of our time,” Trump stated. He also noted that Republican leaders have long sought to achieve these goals.
He explained that Musk and Ramaswamy would bring fresh ideas from outside the government and work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to implement significant changes.
Trump stressed that the new department will focus on improving government efficiency for all Americans. “We will get rid of the huge waste and fraud in our $6.5 trillion government budget,” he said, believing their efforts will boost the economy and enhance government accountability.
He set a deadline for completing their work by July 4, 2026, aiming for a smaller, more efficient government to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Ramaswamy reacted to his appointment on social media, stating, “We will not go gently, Elon Musk.” After suspending his presidential campaign in January, Ramaswamy has remained a strong supporter of Trump.
Musk, a key figure in Trump’s campaign, expressed his excitement, saying, “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!”
As Trump prepares for his new administration, he plans to announce additional cabinet appointments soon, including Florida Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security.
