Truck Overturns Near Masvingo Tollgate While Avoiding Pedestrian

MASVINGO – A South African-registered TMA Express road haulage truck overturned earlier this week, just 50 meters from the Masvingo-Harare tollgate, after the driver swerved to avoid an elderly woman crossing the highway.

According to The Mirror, the driver, who escaped the incident unhurt, said the truck veered off the road during his efforts to prevent a collision with the pedestrian.

The accident comes as Zimbabwe continues to grapple with road safety challenges.

Statistics from the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe show that over 52,000 road accidents were recorded in 2024, resulting in 2,015 fatalities and more than 10,000 injuries.

Human error, including speeding and reckless driving, remains the leading cause of these incidents.

As Zimbabwe enters the Easter and Independence holidays—a time marked by increased travel and traffic congestion, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe has intensified its road safety campaigns.

These campaigns focus on public awareness, enforcement of traffic regulations and encouraging caution among both drivers and pedestrians during this high-risk period.

Recent initiatives include the introduction of advanced technology to monitor public service vehicle speeds and the digitization of driver and driving school records to ensure compliance with safety standards.

These measures aim to reduce the risk of accidents, particularly during high-traffic periods like the festive season.
