Tragic Loss in Zimbabwean Golf: Morton Kombai Passes Away in Road Accident

HARARE – The Zimbabwean golfing community is mourning the sudden loss of Morton Kombai, who tragically passed away in a road accident on Sunday evening—just hours after competing in the 2025 FBC Zim Open in Harare.
The crash, which occurred at the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Seventh Street, also left four fellow golfers injured.
Zimbabweans Tonderai Masunga and Biggie Chibvuri, Malawian Victor Kachepatsonga and Ghanaian Lucky Ayisa are receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Hospital and Kensington Medical Centre.
Chibvuri, who was driving the vehicle at the time, is reportedly in stable condition alongside the others.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances leading to the accident.
The Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) confirmed Kombai’s passing, describing him as a respected figure in the Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association (ZPGA) and a dedicated representative of Rolland Park in Zvishavane, according to NewsDay.
Kombai, known for his humility and passion for the sport, leaves behind his wife and two children.
Tributes continue to pour in from across the golfing world, with fans and fellow athletes expressing sorrow on social media under the hashtag #FarewellKombai.
The ZGA expressed profound sadness at his passing and pledged continued support for the injured players.
In a statement, the association said: “Morton was not only a talented golfer but also an inspiration to many. His dedication to the game and his sportsmanship made him a role model. We will honor his legacy and support those recovering from this tragedy.”
The Zim Open Committee, alongside golf authorities, remains in close contact with medical teams and relevant officials to ensure the players receive the necessary care.
Plans are also being considered for a special tribute event in Kombai’s honor.
