Thousands Stranded, 34 Dead as India’s Northeast Battles Extreme Flooding

INDIA – At least 34 people have died in India’s northeastern states as relentless rainfall over the past four days triggered devastating floods and landslides.

Authorities have warned of further extreme weather, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.

In Sikkim, more than a thousand stranded tourists are being evacuated, while in Meghalaya, army rescue teams are working to assist over 500 people trapped in flood-hit regions. Neighboring

Hundreds of emergency shelters have been opened in Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari to accommodate displaced residents.

Meanwhile, in Manipur, over 3,000 homes have been damaged, and nearly 20,000 people have been displaced due to rising floodwaters.

The Indian Army has launched large-scale rescue operations, evacuating civilians and carrying out emergency repairs on breached riverbanks.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya, predicting continued heavy rainfall.

Authorities remain on high alert as relief efforts continue, aiming to minimize further casualties and destruction.
