Thomas Mapfumo Nears Retirement with Farewell Shows

Chimurenga music legend Thomas “Makunya” Mapfumo is close to completing his wish list as he plans three final shows before retiring from a career that spans over 50 years.
As reported by the Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Mapfumo will hold one of his farewell concerts in South Africa, scheduled for December 6 at the Newtown Music Factory in Johannesburg. This follows a performance in the UK earlier in August.
After the Johannesburg concert, Mapfumo will perform in the United States and finish with a final show in Zimbabwe early next year. In a promotional video, he confirmed, “We are coming to South Africa for a show on December 6, and later we have more performances in the US, followed by one last gig in Zimbabwe.”
Mapfumo has expressed his desire to retire gracefully and be buried in Zimbabwe, where he feels a deep connection.
“I have always loved my country, Zimbabwe, and I am proud to visit my birthplace,” he stated. He also shared his experiences living in the US, noting that life there can be difficult without close friends or support.
The singer highlighted that many Zimbabweans in the diaspora did not leave by choice and often miss their home country. He affirmed his identity as a Zimbabwean, stating, “I will always be Zimbabwean, no matter how long I stay here.”
Although he is preparing for retirement, Mapfumo has not ruled out the possibility of performing in Zimbabwe again.
His nephew, Kurai Makore, considered his musical successor, will be part of the farewell shows, having been featured on the same promotional poster.
As fans eagerly await the December 6 concert in Johannesburg, they celebrate Mapfumo’s legacy and the upcoming performances that promise to honor his remarkable career.
Mapfumo recently celebrated his 80th birthday, surrounded by family and fans who appreciate his contributions to music and culture.
