‘This Place Is Hell’ Mhlanga Sighs Relief After 72 Days Behind Bars

Alpha Media journalist Blessed Mhlanga was finally released from detention on Wednesday after spending 72 days in remand prison—an ordeal sparked by his airing of an interview with ex-ZANU PF Central Committee member and war veteran Blessed “Bombshell” Geza.

Mhlanga walked out of prison following three failed bail attempts that sparked concern across media circles and human rights groups.

His case has become a rallying point for advocates of press freedom in Zimbabwe.

“I was not supposed to be here in the first place—it is general knowledge.

“After 72 days of having my freedom robbed, I am indifferent,” Mhlanga said shortly after his release.

“This place is hell, but the prison officers are doing their best to keep it functioning with no resources. I have to check with my doctors, as I have been unwell.”

The charges stemmed from Mhlanga’s broadcast of an interview with Geza, a former ruling party insider who has become a vocal government critic.

Authorities allege the interview violated broadcasting laws, although Mhlanga insists the charges were legally unsound and politically motivated.

“I have been made aware of a statement suggesting that the reason I am out is because there is justice in this country. I am worried about that statement,” Mhlanga said, questioning the basis of his detention.

“Section 277 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act is clear on how people who work for an organisation, if it is being charged, must be treated. It establishes how to charge corporates or juridical persons.”

As NewZimbabwe reported earlier this week, pressure from civil society and regional media watchdogs may have contributed to the court’s eventual decision to grant him bail.
