“Theatre Without Support Won’t Survive” —Mai Jilimba Speaks Out

Veteran actress Patricia “Mai Jilimba” Musafare has urged Zimbabwe’s arts regulatory bodies to prioritize training and empowerment workshops for artists, emphasizing the urgent need for structured support to sustain careers in film and theatre.

Her plea follows the burial of fellow actor Charles “Marabha” Mapalume, whose financial struggles in life reflected a broader crisis facing many in the industry.

Reflecting on Marabha’s economic hardships, Mai Jilimba underscored the instability plaguing creatives in Zimbabwe.

“We are relieved that he was finally laid to rest, but so much still needs to be done regarding workshops and industry support for artists.

“We must engage with national arts regulatory bodies and demand resources that empower and sustain our craft,” she said.

Despite efforts such as the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) and Culture Month, Zimbabwe’s arts sector remains underfunded.

Many artists, particularly in film and theatre, struggle with low earnings and limited training opportunities, leaving them vulnerable to economic hardship.

“We cannot continue losing talent to poverty and lack of industry backing. Many artists dedicate their lives to entertaining the nation, but when difficulties arise, they are left to struggle alone”, Mai Jilimba emphasized.

With decades of experience, Mai Jilimba has seen firsthand how exploitation, piracy, and financial instability threaten artistic careers.

Studies backed by UNESCO and the International Labour Organization (ILO have revealed that creatives often sell their work below market value due to financial desperation, with women facing additional systemic challenges.

“We are focused and positive that we can turn the situation around. With the right workshops, empowerment programs, and industry collaborations, we can build a stronger future for Zimbabwe’s arts sector.”

Her call for action comes at a critical time, as conversations intensify about how Zimbabwe can better support artists through sustainable funding, legal protections and industry development initiatives.

According to The Herald, Mai Jilimba is widely recognized for her roles in various Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) productions, including “Mawoko Matema,” “Hupenyu Mutoro,” and “Gehena Harina Moyo.”
