The surprising reason why dogs lick their owners

Canine experts have shed light on the surprising reason behind dogs’ licking habits, revealing that it’s not just a sign of affection but also a way for dogs to gather information about their human companions.
According to Dr. Rebecca Greeinstein, a veterinary medical advisor, dogs have a unique way of gathering information about their environment and the people around them.
“Dogs use their sense of smell and taste to explore their surroundings and learn more about the people they interact with,” she explained.
Dr. Greeinstein noted that when dogs lick their human companions, they are able to gather chemical cues from their skin.”This provides them with valuable information about their owner’s emotional state, health and even diet,” she said.
This behavior is not only limited to humans, as dogs also use licking to gather information about their environment and other animals. Dr. Greeinstein cautioned that while licking can be a sign of affection, it’s essential to distinguish between normal and compulsive behavior.
“If your dog is excessively licking surfaces such as tables or carpets, or even themselves, it may indicate an underlying issue that requires attention from a veterinarian,” she advised.
By understanding the reasons behind dogs’ licking habits, owners can better appreciate the complex ways in which their canine companions interact with them and the world around them.
