Thai mother jails methamphetamine-addicted son in homemade cell

THAILAND – A Thai woman, driven by two decades of fear and desperation, has installed an iron jail cell in her home to protect herself from her 35-year-old son, a longtime methamphetamine addict with a history of physical abuse.
Mrs. A opened up about the desperate circumstances that led her to build a makeshift jail cell in her home.
“For twenty years, I have lived in constant fear, haunted by my son’s addiction. My late husband’s untimely passing was a devastating consequence of the relentless stress it brought.
“Now, have made the painful decision to imprison my son in a makeshift cell, providing a bed, bathroom, WiFi and food delivery to safeguard myself”.
Local authorities have flagged the mother’s makeshift cell as a potential human rights violation, citing Thailand’s Criminal Code Article 310 which prohibits unlawful detention.
“The police have ordered me to dismantle the cell, promising alternative solutions for my safety, but how can I?”.
“My son’s past attempts at rehab have been futile. This cell is our last line of defense, safeguarding both me and our community,” said Mrs A.
