Tete Tilder Radio Programme Leads to Arrest of Two Women Over Alleged Child Exploitation

Tete Tilder Radio Programme Leads to Arrest of Two Women Over Alleged Child Exploitation – Two women have been arrested in Harare following allegations that they were exploiting children for financial gain, after their case was exposed during a live radio programme.

The suspects, identified as Shantel and her mother, Sibongile, were taken into police custody on Wednesday after appearing on Star FM’s Tilder Moyo Show, where Shantel appealed for financial assistance to pay school fees for two minors she claimed were under her care.

Concerns were raised during the broadcast after Shantel reportedly failed to provide consistent details regarding her identity and relationship with the children.

The programme’s host, Tilder Moyo, requested that Shantel return the following day accompanied by her mother and their national identity documents for verification purposes.

Subsequent checks allegedly revealed that the two women were using fraudulent national identity documents, with both suspects reportedly sharing the same identification number.

Following this discovery, the matter was reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

Further investigations indicated that the pair allegedly forced at least eight children to solicit money from members of the public along Samora Machel Avenue in Harare.

Police also established that the suspects were arrested while attempting to collect money purportedly intended for school fees.

Speaking on the incident, Moyo said she became suspicious after the inconsistencies in Shantel’s statements.

“After verifying her details with the Registrar-General’s Office, I discovered that she was using a different name, which raised serious concerns,” Moyo said.

Reports also suggest that a local church had previously provided assistance for the children after being misled by the suspects, with the funds allegedly diverted for personal use.

The suspects were detained at Harare Central Police Station. Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
