Tererai Mugwadi’s “Bizarre” Shoko Festival Act Sparks Storm: Art or Meltdown?

Urban grooves songbird Tererai Mugwadi has once again found herself at the center of controversy, this time after a video of her unusual performance at Shoko Festival’s Mash Up Night in September went viral, leaving fans divided.

The once-revered diva, known for timeless hits that defined a generation, appeared “offbeat” and “disconnected” during her set, according to some festival-goers.

“Her stage performance that day was lifeless,” said one fan.

“It was boring,” added another.

Others went further, accusing the “Sango” hitmaker of showing up intoxicated.

“She behaved as someone who was drunk,” one social media user claimed.

Tererai, who performed as a guest artist in a tribute segment honoring legendary producer Take Fizzo, was sharing the stage with other urban grooves heavyweights; Mafriq, Trinity, MC Chita, Mau Mau, and Nembo Bwoy in what was meant to be a nostalgic celebration of Zimbabwe’s early 2000s sound.

But what was meant to be a powerful comeback has instead reignited conversations about the star’s turbulent journey in music and personal life.

Yet, not everyone is reading doom into the performance.

Some fans insist there was more to it a statement wrapped in symbolism.

“This was a deliberate act by Tererai,” said a fan.

“Only creatives will understand the message she is sending to the nation at large in the campaign against drug abuse in the music industry as well as youths.”

This year’s Shoko Festival, themed “The Legacy XV” to mark its 15th anniversary, featured a powerful lineup that included comedian King Kandoro, who headlined the Shoko Comedy Night, and a vibrant Mash Up Night with Reason (Sizwe Alakine) and OneDa.
