Teenager loses freedom for 9 years over cattle theft

MASVINGO – A 19-year-old man from Arda Village, Triangle has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for stealing nine cattle valued at $2 500 from a neighbour’s kraal in a daring nighttime heist.

Brighton Mudewu was arraigned before Masvingo Magistrates Court facing charges of stock theft.

According to State papers, on November 3, 2024, around 1800 hours, the complainant penned his cattle and then went home unaware of the alleged theft that would occur later that night.

During the night, the accused stole nine cattle from the kraal escaping unnoticed.

On the following day, around 0900 hours, the complainant received a tip-off from an informant revealing that his stolen cattle had been recovered in Gwerima in the possession of the accused who intended to sell them.

The court heard that the accused was apprehended by community members after one of them posed as a potential buyer.

After the successful sting, the accused was arrested and the stolen cattle were recovered.
